COTA Victoria congratulates Karen Cusack on her appointment as the inaugural Health Complaints Commissioner in Victoria.
According to a government media release:
A new watchdog with greater powers to protect patients and crack down on dodgy unregistered health service providers and practitioners has started work.
The office of the Health Complaints Commissioner replaces the former office of the Health Services Commissioner, creating a new complaints system with tougher powers to warn and protect the public from harm.
COTA Victoria CEO, Ronda Held believes this new body will give vulnerable health consumers greater protection. According to Ms Held, older people will benefit from this new watchdog. For older people who may be reluctant to initiate a complaint, anyone can report their concern over a health provider and an investigation can also be initiated by the Commissioner.
Disreputable health providers will be named and shamed and can be jailed for up to two years if they breach a practicing ban.
