Australia appointed Ms Susan Ryan, AO as its first Age Discrimination Commissioner in July 2011. COTA Victoria has been delighted to work with Susan Ryan on our common cause of tackling age discrimination. http://www.hreoc.gov.au/age
Current projects of the Age Discrimination Commissioner include:
- Promoting positive & diverse portrayals of older Australians
- Age Positive
- Respect and choice: A human rights approach for ageing and health
- Working Past Our 60s
Prior to Susan Ryan’s appointment, Commissioner Broderick had carriage of the Age Discrimination. You can see her reflection on her time in this portfolio.
Following the National Human Rights Consultation, in 2010 the Federal Government
developed an Australian Human Rights Framework, outlining measures to protect and promote human rights in Australia. http://www.ag.gov.au
The Framework was followed by a Baseline study on the status of human rights in Australia, and a National Human Rights Action Plan was released in 2012. The Baseline study and Action Plan can be viewed here.
Both the Baseline study and the Action Plan include sections on the particular issues facing older people. COTA Victoria is pleased to see this recognition by the Federal
Government of older people as a group whose human rights need specific consideration and protection. As part of the national federation of COTA organisations, we will continue our work to ensure these rights are realized.
