Consumer Forum Quality Indicators Aged Care

Invitation to participate in a Consumer and Carer Forum regarding the implementation of quality indicators in aged care

KPMG invites you to attend one of five Consumer and Carer Forums to be held across Australia, to provide your input into the implementation of home and residential aged care indicators for quality of care and to discuss quality of life and consumer experience in aged care.  These forums seek to build on consultations held in May 2014.

The Department of Social Services (the Department) has been working with the National Aged Care Alliance Quality Indicators Reference Group (QIRG) to develop the voluntary National Aged Care Quality Indicator Programme for residential aged care services.  The objective is to implement a voluntary national quality indicator programme that comprises a set of evidence based quality indicators that are reliable and valid and supported by practical and reliable data collection.  The national programme is expected to commence from 2016.

Quality indicators will give consumers, their families and carers greater access to information about the quality of aged care services and inform their choices about the type of aged care services they use. The adoption of quality indicators is also an opportunity for providers to drive continuous quality improvement while being able to compare their performance with other similar services.

The first stage of the National Aged Care Quality Indicator Programme was to pilot the initial quality indicators of pressure injuries, unplanned weight loss and physical restraint in residential aged care.  The pilot is now nearing completion.  With the completion of the pilot, the Quality Indicator Programme is moving to plan for the implementation of the Quality Indicators, drawing on the experience of the pilot.

KPMG has been assisting the Department in managing the pilot and supporting the implementation of the National Aged Care Quality Indicator Programme.
