New Retirement Housing Advice Service

Dedicated Advice Service for Retirement Housing Residents

Victoria’s first service dedicated to supporting people in Retirement Housing will be up and running from the 3rd of July 2017. The service will be open to residents across Victoria living in caravan and residential parks and villages, retirement villages and rental villages, and could not come at a better time with dodgy operators in the spotlight following major media reports on industry rorts.

Housing for the Aged Action Group (HAAG) is excited to be launching this extension to their previous Retirement Housing Information service, thanks to a 4 year funding commitment from Consumer Affairs Victoria for the Retirement Housing Advice and Advocacy Program.

HAAG has been assisting residents in retirement housing for a number of years but this is the first time a specific program has been provided by government in the retirement housing space.

Shanny Gordon Retirement Housing worker at HAAG says “This funding comes at an important time for HAAG and its members, because we are in the midst of some critical policy and legislative reviews within the retirement housing sector.”

“The added resources enable us to provide more time assisting residents directly with their concerns but also allows us to focus more time towards policy and law improvement to ensure residents interests are properly considered throughout government reviews and responses.”

HAAG’s knowledge and expertise gained over 15 years of working directly with residents have made it an ideal organisation to take on this role.

The Retirement Housing Advice Service (RHAS) can provide information, advice and advocacy for residents living in – or interested in- caravan and residential parks and villages, retirement villages and rental villages. Residents must be 55 years of age and over with some form of financial disadvantage or receiving a Centrelink benefit. The RHAS also provides a workers advice line for to community service workers assisting residents.

Caravan Park residents Allan Meers & Wendy Bramhill have been assisted by Housing for the Aged Action Groups existing Retirement Housing Information Service. “HAAG really helped us understand the issues we were facing – their calm and focused approach was a great assurance at a very difficult time.”

HAAG also convenes two retirement housing working groups which, through campaigns and lobbying, work to change government policy and legislation. HAAG invites anyone interested in joining these groups, or anyone in need of the retirement housing advice to email or call 9654 7389 Mon-Fri 10am-4pm.
