Since April, COTA Victoria has been working in consultation with Brimbank City Council to help update and further develop its Age Friendly City Plan. The multi-part consultation process aimed to engage with as many older people of a wide variety of cultures, ethnicities and demographics as possible.
A community forum held on 15 June attracted close to seventy community members, Councillors and Council staff, as well as the Mayor of Brimbank. Participants were introduced to Age Friendly Cities and Communities and then discussed the challenges and opportunities for change in each of the domains of Age Friendly.
In addition to this forum, over 500 community members and local service providers completed a survey on their priorities in making the area Age Friendly. More than ten seniors clubs and organisations were also interviewed about the challenges of being an older person in Brimbank.
Taking all of these findings into consideration, COTA Victoria made recommendations to Brimbank City Council about how they could take to make their area more Age Friendly.
It’s expected that Brimbank Council’s Age Friendly City Plan 2017−2021 will be completed and made available in the coming months.
