More assistance for people struggling with energy bills

People struggling to pay their energy bill will have stronger protections and more assistance under new rules recently announced by the Essential Services Commission (ESC). Under the new Payment Difficulty Framework people will have stronger protections against disconnection. People cannot be disconnected if their bill is under $300 and it will only be a last resort measure. Where people have larger debts, energy retailers are now required to provide ‘timely advice’ and tailor plans to what people are able to realistically pay. COTA Victoria also commends the ESC on recommending the government reviews.

COTA Victoria encourages people to find the best electricity and gas deal by using the Victorian Government Energy Compare website. Seniors groups and older people can participate in a Free COTA information session on ‘Saving on Energy’ and getting the best deal. Simply call 1300 13 50 90.
