The National Immunisation Program regards persons aged 65 years of age and above as vulnerable groups at increased risk of severe disease from influenza, and therefore eligible for the free seasonal influenza vaccine.
From 1 May 2018, mandatory protection against the flu has been extended to staff and volunteers at Australian Government-subsidised residential aged care providers.
Residential aged care providers will be required to:
- provide staff and volunteers with access to a free flu vaccination each year
- promote the benefits of the vaccination, including for the health outcomes of residents
- keep a record of the number of staff and volunteers that receive a flu vaccination each year (whether or not under the flu Vaccination Program).
