Both the Coalition and Labor are focusing on low income consumers and those experiencing hardship in a range of announced election promises. The Coalition is proposing the introduction of a ‘bulk buy’ power deal for concession card holders while Labor announced today plans to abolish energy ‘standing offers’. This means fairer default offers for consumers that are not active ‘shoppers’ in the energy marketplace. Low income consumers will have greater protection from price gouging from energy retailers through the government’s proposed default offer if re-elected.
