Welcome to the August edition of COTA Connects. As I write, we are once again eagerly awaiting an announcement about whether lockdown restrictions will continue or be eased. Victorians are used to this by now, but it’s still a tough way to live, and my wish for our readers is that you are ok. If you’re doing it tough, please reach out to someone. Those of us feeling a little less impacted by lockdowns can help by reaching out to check on a friend, family member or neighbour. And of course, our COTA WISE information line is also here if you need us.
The COTA Victoria team are back in our home offices, busy rescheduling planned gatherings and continuing our work. You will see a few more interesting projects and activities in months to come as some new initiatives have received support.
One of our beloved projects, Reach, Train, Employ, saw participants graduate in July. Some 37 fabulous mature workers achieved a Certificate III in Individual Support, and nearly all have secured jobs already. They’re an example to us all, proving that you can retrain and start a new career at any age — the oldest participant was 75. We wish all our graduates the very best in their future careers — you are rock stars!
Did you know the Victorian Government is offering a Power Saver Bonus? We’re about to start information sessions on how you can understand your energy bill and find out it you’re eligible for this $250 payment.
We regularly hear from retirees seeking advice on retirement villages. So when the Victorian Government announced it was reviewing the law on retirement villages, we jumped at the opportunity to make sure your voices are heard. Its not over yet, and there’s still time to contribute your opinion.
COTA Victoria would not be able to do what we do without our volunteers. They are very important to us, and we like to think we’re important to them as well.
Seniors Rights Victoria’s latest videos on planning ahead have been dubbed in other languages, and are now available to be viewed. And we hear an incredible tale of escape from Lee of OM:NI Diamond Creek.
Keep safe, and don’t forget to book in for your COVID vaccine if you haven’t already!
Is there someone you think might want to know what COTA Victoria is up to and would enjoy COTA Connects? Please feel free to share it with them.
