Fairer Energy Deal a win for all consumers
COTA Victoria commends the Victorian Government’s introduction of a fair and efficient regulated energy deal for consumers.
From the 1st July 2019, The Victorian Default Offer (VDO) gives all Victorians access to a mid-range, simple, no traps, good value deal.
Consumers can now look at a ‘discount offer’ and know whether it stacks up by comparing it to the VDO.
Energy retailers have been exploiting loyal consumers and people that don’t switch or ‘shop around’. Unfair, complex and deliberately confusing pricing has finally been tackled. The Victorian Government’s VDO is also a better deal than the Default Market Offer introduced by the Federal Government in other states and territories.
Almost 5% of Victorian households currently on standing offers will automatically be placed on the cheaper Victorian Default Offer on July 1st 2019. As a result, these households will save hundreds of dollars per year.
COTA Victoria also commends the Victorian government on the appointment of an Energy Commissioner to the Essential Services Commission to monitor the impact of the VDO and ensure energy retailers abide by the new rules.
