Last year, more than 1,000 Australians aged 60+ completed an online survey about their experiences of sexual health discussions with healthcare professionals. Around four in five respondents said they would speak to a doctor about their sexual health, while around 40% might also speak to a nurse or psychologist. But of those who had seen a doctor in the last 12 months, only 16% had been asked about their sexual health.
Follow-up interviews with some survey participants were recorded. With feedback from GPs, nurses and aged care workers, these interviews formed the basis for educational videos targeted at the aged care sector and healthcare students and professionals.
Already several universities and professional associations have said that they will be using the videos as educational resources in medical, nursing and gerontology degrees and in professional development training.
