This project on how to engage older people in sport and physical activity was developed by COTA Victoria.  The project was funded by Sport and Recreation Victoria. The aim is to fill the gap on supporting sporting clubs and organisations getting more older people involved in not only physical activity but as volunteers, committee people or even as spectators.  Getting people involved, connected and healthy! We consulted with three areas across Victoria

  • Darebin City Council (metropolitan)
  • Macedon Ranges Shire (a growing municipality)
  • Greater Shepparton (regional)

COTA met with over 20 local sports clubs, leisure centres, neighbourhood houses and spoke to another 15 sports clubs. The project was launched on 10 June in Shepparton where guest speakers gave examples of success stories of being engaged in sport and physical activity.  They included: Stan Cornish – Mooroopna Cricket Club Norm Cahill – Tennis Coach Lisa Niglia – Living Longer Living Stronger program for older people in Tatura Key messages

  • Network with others to share your ideas and resources
  • Be flexible:. Modify your activities to make them enjoyable
  • Consult older people about their needs
  • Work together, form partnerships and share information
  • Physical Activity improves people’s physical and mental health

Overall fun and meeting new people are major drawcards in encouraging older people to be part of your club – they don’t have to compete – they can volunteer!! I hope people, clubs and organisations will use it.  It has already been said that this resource can be used for any age group not just older people.  Which is good – because as you may have noticed people do not categorise themselves as being old. We will be promoting the resource through other places – state sporting association,  Vic sport and Local Councils.  It will be placed on the ‘Club Help” website for all Victorian Sports Clubs – see the guide for details. The document is a changing document.  We are already updating it and making alterations. Our population is getting older and the number of older people is growing fast.
