Get Social! – Victorian Seniors Festival 2018
7 – 12 October

The Victorian Seniors Festival returns this October, to celebrate the more than a million Victorians aged 60+ who make such a valuable contribution to our society.

This year’s Festival theme is “Get Social”. The Festival experience is all about getting out and about in your local community and beyond. All Victorian Seniors Card holders can get out and explore metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria during the Festival with free public transport from 7 to 14 October 2018.

COTA Victoria is celebrating too! Festivities kick off with Celebration Day at Federation Square on Sunday 7th of October 2018. Come and visit COTA Victoria in our marquee at Federation Square. We will also be at the Festival Hub in Melbourne Town Hall during the Victorian Seniors Festival from Monday 8th October to Friday 13th October.

More than 2,000 events and activities will be held around the state throughout the month for older Victorians to enjoy with family and friends. COTA Victoria also offers a full program of talks during Senior’s Week. Come along get some useful information and meet new friends.

COTA Green Sages will host a panel discussion on getting active around solutions to climate change. What ideas do we have? Do older people play a special role?

This talk is an exploration of “performance poetry” in Melbourne to show the poetry of the “ear” and its manifestations on a host of human concerns. Presented by Pi O.

COTA have established a family story telling service. Johnathon Pietsch will demonstrate how to use Reminiscing Story Cards to bring your family history to life.

Mary Harnan of Allsorters is an expert in helping people overwhelmed with stuff in their homes to sort them out, identify treasures and let go of the unnecessary.

Our speakers Mohammed and Salwa were forced to flee their “beloved, wounded Syria” and now live and work in Melbourne as community volunteers. Come and hear their incredible story.

Arranging for subsidised home help for you or a loved one can be challenging. Kirsty Chalmers shares her journey of trying to navigate the system on behalf of her mother.

Reading, in a group, sharing the experience of the words and the rhythm can improve wellbeing for both listener and reader. Join COTA’s Victoria Wells, a qualified bibliotherapist, as she leads a shared reading session.

  2:00pm to 3:30pm Real Forensic Scientists

We’ve all seen the programs about how a murder is solved but is it like that for real? Join Dr Henry Roberts, former forensic scientist with Victoria Police as he explains how DNA is used in evidence.
