Social connection is crucial for leading a good life. Feeling close to family, friends, and the community brings us happiness, support, and a sense of purpose. It is important for our well-being to spend time with others, whether it’s going on a walk or meeting at a local coffee shop.
Launched in May 2023, Connect Local is a social connection program in Glen Eira that helps older people live life to its fullest. Its goal is to support people to feel at home in their local community, surrounded by people they love and spending time doing what matters most to them.
When someone joins Connect Local, they are paired up with a friendly Community Connector. The Connector will work with the individual to find out what’s important to them and which activities and services in Glen Eira might meet their needs. Together, the Connector and the participant develop an action plan for improving social connection and feeling part of the community.
John’s Connect Local story
When John (above right, alongside his friend Ken at Caulfield South Community House) first contacted Connect Local after his wife had recently passed away and he was feeling lost and alone. When asked about how his life had changed since Connect Local, John had this to say: “It’s changed quite dramatically. I was desperate when I contacted Connect Local. Connect Local introduced me to Caulfield South Community House. I started to come on a Thursday afternoon to play cards, and now I come… 4 to 5 times a week. I’m meeting people now and helping out there. My life has changed completely.”
When asked if he felt more connected to his local community since Connect Local, John said, “Yes, very much so. I look around and see things I never noticed before. I feel a lot more community-minded. I want to help out in any way I can, whether that’s at Caulfield South Community House or for my neighbours.”
