Let’s make Victoria age friendly together

With the Victorian election looming, we’re asking candidates from all parties to commit to measures that will help Victorians to maintain their health, mobility, independence, and enjoyment of life as they age. Last month, we launched our campaign platform and kicked off the conversation about what older Victorians need from an incoming government.

Last month, we held an event to launch our 2022 Victorian election platform and create a conversation about the needs of older people.

COTA Victoria’s new CEO, Chris Potaris, outlined our six priority issues for the 2022 state election, which we developed in consultation with older people. Older people make up more than 20% of Victorian voters – and this number is growing. With this in mind, we’re calling on all parties and independents to commit to six policy measures that will help Victorians to maintain their health, mobility, independence, and enjoyment of life as they age. These measures would also offer a significant return on investment by:
• maximising older Victorians’ contribution to the community and economy
• reducing expenditure in other areas, such as health and community care, and
• delaying or preventing people from moving into residential care.

The event included a panel discussion with representatives from the Housing for the Aged Action Group, Australian Multicultural Services, the Disability Resources Centre and Seniors Rights Victoria. This was followed by a presentation from Victorian Council of Social Service CEO, Emma King, on how to advocate to your local MP.

The event was attended by community members and other advocacy organisations that work with older people. If you didn’t make it on the day, you can catch up on the Make Victoria Age Friendly event recording.

There’s still time to take action and encourage others in your network to have their say. As well as voting, you can make your voice heard by emailing your local MP or political candidate about the issues that matter to you.
