Digital Victorian driver licences roll out in May 2024

The Victorian Government has recently announced that digital driver licences will begin to be rolled out in May 2024. This post details all the information that older Victorians need to know about digital driver licences.

Is a digital Victorian driver licence mandatory?

No. If you’re more comfortable using your traditional, physical driver licence you are more than welcome to continue doing so.

“This is an additional way Victorians can access and show their licencing details,” said the Victorian Government in a statement to COTA Victoria.

“The use of a digital driver licence by a customer is optional,” the Victorian Government continued. “[P]hysical licences will continue to be issued for all Victorian drivers and compulsory carriage requirements have not changed.”

Who can access a digital Victorian driver licence?

“From May 2024, Victorians who are full licence holders will be able to access their digital driver licence,” said the Victorian Government. “Learner and Probationary (L and P) drivers will be able to access their digital licence by 2025.

“The digital driver licence is updated in real time, reflecting changes to licence conditions and personal information like home addresses.

Digital licences have undergone rigorous privacy and security testing, boasting features like a dynamic hologram and a timed QR code that businesses and authorities can scan to verify authenticity and prevent fraudulent use.

How do you access your digital Victorian driver licence?

Your Victorian digital driver licence can be accessed via two apps: the myVicRoads app and the Service Victoria app.

In May, more than 4.5 million Victorians who are fully licenced drivers, motorcyclists, or heavy vehicle operators will be the first eligible to download digital driver’s licences as part of the state-wide launch,” said the Victorian Government.
